*Saturday Night Live* has long been known for its lighthearted, often humorous promos,
typically featuring playful banter between the host, musical guest, and cast members.
However, the promo for Dave Chappelle’s return to the show on January 20 took a very different, more cinematic approach, with a voiceover
that was either performed by Morgan Freeman or designed to mimic his signature style.
The promo opens with the resonant voice of the narrator, declaring, “Studio 8H. New York City’s hallowed comedy ground,”
as the camera glides through the iconic hallways of the *SNL* building.
It then introduces the show’s long legacy, noting the “50-year tradition of laughter at *Saturday Night Live*.” The promo proceeds with the voiceover continuing, “All the greats have passed through these halls… Also, Steven Seagal. And this Saturday… Dave’s back.” The final line, featuring a mention of Chappelle’s return, is followed by a striking image of the comedian seated on stage, the camera zooming in as he rests on a stool.
The reference to Steven Seagal is a witty nod to the action star’s infamous 1991 *SNL* appearance. Seagal, who has since become known for his difficult behavior during his single hosting gig, has been frequently cited by cast members and Lorne Michaels as one of the least successful hosts in *SNL* history. His challenging personality made him the subject of much criticism, leading many to joke about his less-than-glorious role in the show’s storied history. This tongue-in-cheek mention of Seagal adds a layer of humor to the promo, as it contrasts the legendary comedic talents that have graced the *SNL* stage with Seagal’s much-maligned appearance.
Chappelle, on the other hand, is a host who is widely celebrated for his sharp wit and ability to captivate audiences. This marks his return to *SNL* following several appearances in recent years. His previous stints as host came in the aftermath of significant presidential elections—in 2016 and 2020—where his comedy was often political, offering his sharp perspective on the state of the nation. He returned once more in 2022, continuing his successful relationship with the show. Fans of the comedian will be excited to see him back on stage, ready to bring his unique humor to a new audience.
Joining Chappelle for the January 20 episode is musical guest GloRilla, who is making waves in the music industry with her recently earned Grammy nominations. Her hit single “Yeah Glo!” has brought her considerable attention, and she’s expected to bring high energy to the *SNL* stage as she performs for viewers. GloRilla’s musical style and infectious persona will undoubtedly create an exciting dynamic as she joins the legendary comedian on stage.
Looking ahead, *SNL* fans can also anticipate an exciting next episode on January 27, which will feature actor Timothée Chalamet hosting for the third time. This time, however, Chalamet will also serve as the musical guest, a rarity for the show. It is believed that Chalamet will be performing songs from the musical catalog of Bob Dylan, as he portrays the legendary musician in the upcoming biopic *A Complete Unknown* from Searchlight. The combination of Chalamet’s musical talent and acting prowess will likely make for a memorable episode.
Overall, the promo for Chappelle’s return to *Saturday Night Live* stands out as a reflection of the show’s ability to evolve while still paying homage to its rich legacy. The serious tone of the voiceover contrasts with the comedic lightness of the program, creating an engaging preview for what promises to be another exciting episode of *SNL*.
