Rory McIlroy Reacts to Tiger Woods’ Achilles Injury
The golf world was shaken when Tiger Woods announced that he had suffered a ruptured left Achilles tendon while ramping up his training for the 2025 Masters. The injury, which required surgery, means that Woods will not be competing this year, leaving fans and fellow players deeply disheartened.
One of the most vocal supporters of Woods during this difficult time is Rory McIlroy. Speaking to reporters, McIlroy did not hide his disappointment.
“It sucks, yeah. He doesn’t have much luck when it comes to injuries and his body,” McIlroy stated. “Obviously, he was trying to ramp up to get ready for Augusta, and Achilles surgeries obviously aren’t fun. So, hope he’s in good spirits, and hoping he’s doing okay. We obviously won’t see him play golf this year, and hopefully we see him maybe play in 2026.”
McIlroy, who has often spoken about Woods’ influence on his career, made it clear that he believes Woods will attempt a comeback. “He’ll try… Judging by prior behavior, he’ll definitely try,” McIlroy said with confidence.

While Woods has not yet played on the PGA Tour in 2025, his last appearance in a professional event was at The 2024 Open Championship at Royal Troon Golf Course last July. His planned comeback at The Genesis Invitational in February was canceled following the death of his mother, further delaying his return to competitive play.
Woods’ history of injuries is extensive. From multiple back surgeries to the severe leg and ankle injuries sustained in a 2021 car accident, his body has endured significant trauma. Despite these setbacks, Woods has always demonstrated an unparalleled level of determination and resilience.

What This Means for the 2025 Masters and Beyond
With Tiger Woods officially out for the 2025 Masters, the tournament will lack one of its most iconic figures. His absence leaves a notable void in the competition, as fans have long admired his ability to defy the odds and deliver legendary performances at Augusta National.
While Woods recovers, Rory McIlroy is set to participate in the 2025 Masters, hoping to add another major championship to his resume. He will also be competing at The Players Championship at TPC Sawgrass, where he will face stiff competition from two-time defending champion Scottie Scheffler.
Beyond his individual play, Woods has remained involved in the sport in other capacities. He has partnered with McIlroy and sports executive Mike McCarley to launch the indoor golf league TGL, continuing to influence the game even while he is unable to compete.
