Comedian and TV host Joel Dommett has thrown his hat into the ring for the role of hosting Family Fortunes, following a string of accusations against current host Gino D’Acampo.
D’Acampo, the celebrity chef known for his vibrant personality and long-standing TV career,
has been facing allegations of inappropriate behavior, prompting ITV to halt the airing of pre-filmed episodes of the popular quiz show.
This has opened the door for new possibilities, with Dommett, best known for hosting The Masked Singer, suggesting he could be the right fit to take over the iconic game show.
The accusations against D’Acampo, which stem from an alleged incident that took place nearly 15 years ago, have sparked a wider investigation into his conduct.
His legal team has since denied the claims, with a spokesperson for the chef emphasizing that he does not recall the alleged events and that the accusations are completely false.
The statement asserted, “Mr. D’Acampo is horrified to be accused of ‘power play’ and an ‘aggressive act.’ He emphatically and unequivocally denies these allegations.” Despite the strong denial, the controversy surrounding D’Acampo’s behavior has led to a reassessment of his position on Family Fortunes.
While ITV has not made an official statement about the future of D’Acampo on the show, the network has reportedly made the decision not to air any more pre-recorded episodes of Family Fortunes. With his future on the show uncertain, Dommett has seized the opportunity to publicly express his interest in stepping into the role. On the Always Be Comedy podcast, Dommett shared his enthusiasm for the idea, stating, “Now Gino D’Acampo is gone, maybe I’ve got the chance to slide in. I’ve been waiting for that.”
Dommett went on to discuss his love for the format of Family Fortunes, describing it as “the best show on telly.” He explained that the beauty of the show lies in the way both correct and incorrect answers can be equally satisfying to the audience. “The perfect format is where the right answer or wrong answer are both satisfying, but that’s so hard to achieve,” he said. Dommett, who has a background in comedy, highlighted how Family Feud, the American version of the show, has perfected this balance, making it one of his favorite television programs. He expressed a desire to bring a similar energy to the UK version while adding his own twist.
“The American one leads you down a fun garden path with every answer,” he continued, referencing the often unpredictable responses contestants give on Family Feud. “When they say ‘name a race,’ they want you to say ‘the 100 metres’ or ‘a heptathlon,’ but someone says ‘Chinese people,’ and everyone laughs. That’s what you need in it!” Dommett’s remarks hint at his vision for the show—a mix of humor, spontaneity, and a bit of irreverence that would align with his comedic style.
Joel Dommett has been a familiar face on ITV, particularly through his hosting duties on The Masked Singer, where he oversaw the mystery-filled celebrity competition. His affable nature and quick wit have won over viewers, with his charisma making him a standout host. His recent success on The Masked Singer culminated in a memorable season finale where musical theatre star Samantha Barks emerged as the winner, adding to the show’s already impressive track record.
Dommett’s involvement with The Masked Singer has allowed him to connect with a wide range of audiences, and his potential move to Family Fortunes could be a natural progression. He is no stranger to the world of game shows and has proven himself capable of managing a lively atmosphere, making him a strong contender for the role.
Meanwhile, D’Acampo’s legal team has expressed their disappointment over the accusations, emphasizing that this incident, which was not raised until now, has been distressing for him and his family. While the chef’s future with ITV remains in question, Dommett’s remarks have sparked speculation about who will fill the Family Fortunes hosting position going forward.
As ITV navigates the fallout from the allegations, Dommett’s public interest in taking over the show could mark the beginning of a new chapter for Family Fortunes. While the controversy surrounding D’Acampo continues to unfold, it seems likely that Joel Dommett’s name will be one to watch in the coming weeks as the fate of the quiz show—and its next host—hangs in the balance.
