The 38-year-old broadcaster, who also co-hosts on Capital FM, confessed that she feared being replaced while she was away from work following the birth of her daughter, Ruby.
Balancing Motherhood and Career Pressures
Sian and her fiancé, Jake Beckett, welcomed their baby girl last summer.

However, just two months after giving birth, she returned to her role on This Morning, sharing the screen with Craig Doyle.

The reason behind her quick return? A lingering fear that stepping away from the industry for too long could put her career at risk.

Speaking to The Sun, Sian admitted that she only took three months of maternity leave across both of her jobs because she was afraid of being replaced.
“I worried I would be off for a month, and they would decide someone else is better and then they would replace me,” she confessed. “Those are the dark thoughts you have. It’s probably what put me off earlier in my life even thinking about having kids, because I thought, ‘How could I?’”
The presenter acknowledged that these concerns are not unique to her, suggesting that many women in the television industry feel the same anxiety about taking time off for motherhood.
“I think most women in the TV industry will admit you get a bit nervous about having time off to have a baby, especially if you have just worked your whole life to get where you are, which I have,” she explained.
Despite her worries, Sian fully embraced her maternity leave, calling it the longest break from work she had ever taken. She described welcoming her first child as “the best thing” she had ever done and said she was “loving every second” of being a mother.
A Risk That Changed Her Life
Born in Nottingham, Sian’s journey to television success began at a young age. At just 19, she landed her first presenting role on Channel 5, all while working part-time as a shop assistant at New Look.

By 2010, she had secured a coveted position as the face of Channel 5 News, cementing her place in the industry. However, Sian’s big break didn’t come without sacrifice.
She recently revealed on the Sliding Doors podcast that she risked losing her retail job to chase her dream of becoming a presenter. She recalled traveling to London for a £175 presenting gig, even though she was scheduled to work a shift at New Look’s Newark store.
“If I hadn’t risked it, I wouldn’t have done the advert, which was played on a loop in Channel 5’s offices and got me my big TV break,” she shared.
To make it work, she secretly arranged for two different colleagues to cover parts of her shift, effectively splitting her work hours. However, her plan backfired when her boss realized she wasn’t at the store.
“I was there [at the audition] since 8 AM, but I hadn’t been used. At midday, my phone rang, and it’s my boss. I was shaking because it’s not my character to do something like that—I care too much,” Sian recalled.

When she admitted to being in London for an audition, her manager was furious.
“She said, ‘What do you mean? Who’s going to lock up? You’ve put me in such a bad position,’” Sian remembered.
Despite the immediate consequences, the gamble paid off, launching her into the world of television presenting.
The Challenges of Working in Television as a New Mother
Sian’s story reflects the pressures faced by women in media, particularly when balancing their careers with motherhood. The fast-paced nature of the entertainment industry means time away from the spotlight can sometimes feel like a step backward.
Her experience echoes the concerns of many working mothers who fear being sidelined after maternity leave. While laws and workplace policies have improved in recent years, the underlying anxiety about job security remains a reality for many professionals.

Sian’s honesty about her struggles highlights the difficult choices women often face in competitive industries. Her decision to return to work early was driven by fear, but it also showcases her deep passion and dedication to her career.
Despite her concerns, Sian continues to thrive as a presenter on both This Morning and Capital FM, proving that it is possible to navigate the challenges of parenthood while maintaining a successful career.
As she embraces motherhood while continuing her broadcasting journey, her story serves as a powerful reminder of the resilience and determination required to succeed in the entertainment industry.
