Robbie Williams has confessed that his long-running joke about allegedly sleeping with most of the Spice Girls didn’t sit well with David Beckham.

The former Take That star has often made lighthearted remarks about his connections with the iconic girl group,
but he now acknowledges that his quip may have ruffled some feathers—particularly with Victoria Beckham’s husband.
During a candid chat on SiriusXM, Robbie reflected on a joke he used to tell during his live performances.

The singer, now 50, would often say, “Ladies and gentlemen, I feel very fortunate. I’m one of the only people on the planet that’s been in Take That and four out of five of the Spice Girls.”

While the line always got a laugh, he now realizes that it didn’t sit well with certain people.

Regretting the Quip—but Not Enough to Stop
Robbie admitted that the joke wasn’t actually true but kept it in his routine because of how well it landed with audiences. “It is a good line, but it upset all husbands, and it’s not true,” he clarified. “I’m sorry, but it’s still funny.”
However, the Angels singer recently bumped into David Beckham in New York and was reminded of the impact of his words. “I know he’s heard that line, and I know he wasn’t happy about it,” Robbie revealed. As a self-proclaimed football fanatic and lifelong admirer of the legendary England captain, the realization that he had offended Beckham was particularly painful. “It destroys a bit of my soccer-loving soul because I adore him. So for me to think that I’ve upset him or offended him in any way, I feel bad,” he admitted.
Despite regretting any unintended offense, Robbie insisted that his comedic instincts sometimes get the better of him. “But I’ve got to do my jokes,” he added with a smirk.
The Truth Behind the Spice Girls Rumors
While Robbie has been romantically linked to Spice Girls members Mel B and Geri Horner in the past, he has played down the extent of those relationships. “I dunno if ‘dated’ is what I did,” he cryptically remarked.

The joke even found its way into his upcoming biopic, Better Man, despite Robbie’s efforts to leave it in the past. “Michael Gracey [the director] made me keep it in,” he said, suggesting that while he wanted to move on from the remark, it was too embedded in his public persona to remove. “Out of respect to the girls, I’ve been trying to not say it,” he added.
A Rocky Road to Love with Ayda Field
While David Beckham might not be laughing at Robbie’s jokes, there is one person who has stuck by him through thick and thin—his wife, Ayda Field. The couple, who married in 2010, have built a strong and enduring relationship, but their love story was far from smooth in the beginning.
In his recent Netflix documentary, Robbie Williams, the singer and his wife opened up about the tumultuous early days of their romance. The pair first met in 2006 through mutual friends, but their introduction came at a time when Robbie was battling personal demons. Just hours before meeting Ayda, he had been with his drug dealer. She later revealed in the documentary that despite his troubled state, she felt an immediate connection. “It was like the universe opened up,” she recalled.

Robbie, too, sensed something special, saying, “I had this moment where I felt as if I’d known her forever.”
However, the beginning of their relationship was rocky, particularly due to Robbie’s struggles with addiction. He eventually made the painful decision to break up with Ayda, believing that he needed to focus on his recovery.
A Painful Breakup and a Heartfelt Reunion
In an emotional moment in the documentary, Ayda reflected on the phone call that ended their relationship. “I remember it was 2 a.m., and I called him, and I was like, ‘I am just getting on the highway,’ and he’s like, ‘Are you driving? Call me when you get home.’”
The conversation took a heartbreaking turn when Robbie told her, “I can’t be in a relationship, I have to get better, and I can’t be with you. I have to break up with you.”
Ayda, with tears in her eyes, admitted that while she understood his reasoning, it was still devastating. “I saw that he was unwell, and I remember thinking, ‘I just want you to get better.’” She described the moment as crushing, adding, “He was my soulmate, and then he was gone.”

Despite this difficult period, the couple eventually found their way back to each other. Robbie worked on his sobriety, and Ayda remained a constant source of support. Today, they share four children and a marriage that has weathered life’s ups and downs.
Looking Back and Moving Forward
Although Robbie Williams may never fully live down his infamous Spice Girls joke, he continues to reflect on his past with honesty and humor. While David Beckham may not have been amused, Robbie remains unapologetically himself—a man who has faced struggles, made mistakes, but ultimately found love and stability with Ayda.
Whether on stage cracking cheeky jokes or opening up about his personal battles, Robbie Williams proves time and time again that he is never afraid to say what’s on his mind—even if it gets him into trouble.
