The debate around nepotism in the entertainment industry has been reignited, with Willow Smith sharing her thoughts. In December 2022, New York Magazine sparked conversations with a cover showcasing “nepo babies,” featuring stars like Dakota Johnson, Zoë Kravitz, and Lily-Rose Depp, all children of Hollywood icons.
Willow, daughter of Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith, has pushed back against being labeled a “nepo baby.” While critics argue her success is tied to her famous lineage, Willow asserts her achievements stem from hard work and individuality. She told Interview Magazine she’s learned to trust her instincts and overcome self-doubt despite immense pressure to honor her parents’ legacy.
Speaking to Allure, Willow acknowledged her privilege but emphasized the unique challenges of being Black in America. She explained, “Even with privilege… you’re still Black.” Willow added that her drive to prove herself stems from perceptions that her success is solely due to her parents. However, she now embraces her individuality, declaring, “I don’t need to prove s*** to anybody.”
