Al Roker was back on Today on Wednesday, February 12, following a brief absence from the show in the wake of his ex-wife Alice Bell’s passing.

The 70-year-old weatherman and television personality had skipped the February 11 episode
but returned with his signature enthusiasm, capturing a special moment with Philadelphia Eagles quarterback and Super Bowl LIX champion Jalen Hurts.
Sharing a selfie with Hurts on Instagram, Roker expressed his excitement at meeting the star athlete.

“What a thrill meeting #superbowl champion #mvp @philadelphiaeagles quarterback @jalenhurts this morning at the @todayshow,” he wrote.
His return to work came just two days after his eldest daughter, Courtney Roker Laga, confirmed the passing of her mother, Alice Bell, in a heartfelt social media post.

Courtney Roker Laga Honors Her Late Mother
On February 10, Courtney, 37, took to Instagram to share the heartbreaking news of Bell’s passing, posting a series of photos that captured cherished moments between her mother, herself, and her 19-month-old daughter, Sky.
“She was my mother, my heart, and the most loving grandmother to Sky,” Courtney wrote. “I was with her for her last breath, and I will carry her love with me always.”
Though Courtney did not disclose her mother’s cause of death, one of the images in her tribute showed Bell using an oxygen tube while holding her granddaughter. The post was met with an outpouring of support, including messages from Roker’s colleagues. Former Today co-host Tamron Hall offered her condolences, writing, “Sending our love.” Today contributor Joy Bauer also commented, sending “So much love❤️🙏.”

Roker and Bell’s History
Al Roker and Alice Bell married in 1984 and adopted their daughter, Courtney, in 1987. Their marriage eventually ended in divorce in 1994, and Roker later found love again with fellow journalist Deborah Roberts. The couple tied the knot in 1995 and went on to have two children together: daughter Leila, 26, and son Nick, 22.
Despite the changes in their family dynamic, Courtney maintained a close relationship with both her mother and her stepmother. She has often expressed gratitude for having Roberts in her life, referring to her as a “bonus mom” in a heartfelt Instagram birthday tribute in September 2023. “More blessings, love, joy and peace in your life today and forever,” she wrote, sharing a mix of throwback and recent photos.
A Close-Knit Family

Courtney has spoken openly about the important women in her life. In a Mother’s Day Instagram post in May 2022, she honored both Bell and Roberts, as well as her mother-in-law, Barbara Laga. “Three of the most important women in my life,” she wrote, highlighting the deep bond she shares with her family.
She has also shared her admiration for her father over the years. In August 2024, she posted a loving tribute to Roker on his 70th birthday, calling him her “hero” and biggest supporter. “Dad, your strength, kindness, patience, and love have shaped me into who I am today,” she wrote. “I’m so grateful for every moment we’ve shared and all the wisdom you’ve passed down. Cheers to many more years of laughter, love, and memories ❤️.”
In addition to their personal connection, Courtney and Roker have also worked together professionally. The father-daughter duo collaborated on the October 2024 cookbook Al Roker’s Recipes to Live By, further strengthening their bond through a shared passion for food and family traditions.
Moving Forward While Honoring the Past

While Roker has not publicly addressed Bell’s passing on Today, his return to the show signals a step forward as he continues his routine amid personal loss. His enduring support system, including his wife Deborah and their children, will undoubtedly help him navigate this difficult time.
As Roker continues to brighten mornings for Today viewers, he carries with him the love of his family and the cherished memories of those who have played significant roles in his life.
